WHAT IS POWDER COATING?
Powder coating is a new and improved type of metal painting and finishing process that has replaced liquid painting when durable paint is wanted. For example, the rims on a car will have a lot of wear and tear, and will often need a strong coating than something that doesn’t deal with a lot of damage. The powder coating is applied as dry powder. The different between liquid paint and powder coatings is that the coatings do not need any solvents to keep the binder and filler parts in liquid form. The powder is sprayed on electrostatically and then cured with high heat for a covering. It does not matter if you are working on a custom car or are wanting patio furniture to stand up to the elements, we can do it all. The powder is a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer. It normally is used to create a hard finish that is harder than regular paint. Powder coating is often used for coating metals which is great for custom cars.

THE POWDER COATING PROCESS
Powder coating car, truck, or motorcycle parts do require the item to be pre-treated before it is coated. The pre-treatment is a mix of chemical cleaning and abrasive mechanical cleaning to prep the surface to be coated. Powder coating will turn out best when the rust or coating has been removed.
WHAT CAN OR CANNOT BE POWDER COATED?
Powder coating will often work best when it is applied to assemblies, metal parts and weldments. Things that are non-metallic like fabric, glass, ceramic, wood, rubber, and plastic can’t be powder coated. Soldered parts can’t be coated either due to high temperatures that are needed to cure the coating.
BEFORE COATING
Before coating, the parts will be hung on a rack. This allows it to be completely coated. The application is done in a clean booth that will keep out dust or other powder colors. The parts are electrically grounded and then the powder is sprayed on using a system that electrically charges the powder. Once the powder is charged, it will attract to the grounded item.
AFTER COATING
Once it part is coated, it is removed and placed in a curing oven. Once the part has been heated, the powder becomes a gel, and then flows evenly around the part to create a smooth finish. Once the powder reached the curing temperature, cross-linking happens. Once the curing is done, the parts are placed in cool are and then used.
PLEASE NOTE – Powder coating will not always work in every situation.
For example, if you are trying to match a specific paint color, it will not work.
